Why is life given to a man whose path is hidden, whom God has hedged in?” – Job 3:23
As the weight of his misfortune bore down upon his body, mind, and emotions, Job dared to question his own existence. Amazingly, he never questioned God’s sovereignty or considered taking his own life (though it seems his wife encouraged him to do both). Our life’s path, oft-difficult, but also oft-blessed (which is difficult to remember in the midst of tribulation), is usually hidden. It is typically enveloped in darkness, whether we are feeling hedged in or not. Job’s question was rooted in raw, human suffering and it is easy to understand the desperation that would bring a person to ask it.
Is there an answer?
God gives life, but He also takes it away. As sovereign Creator, it is His prerogative. While Job reminds us that it is very “human” to question, he also reveals to us that it is very God to teach us through His silence. I pray that if you find your path hidden today … if you feel like there is no way out … you will know the Creator is still there. The way, your path is not hidden to Him.
