Is God There?

The perimeter of the city will be six miles, and the name of the city from that day on will be: Yahweh Is There. – Ezekiel 48:35
I think most pastors will tell you that no matter how difficult it may have been, their first pastorate was “special.” My first experience in vocational ministry was on staff at small church in Mississippi, but my first pastorate was at a small, struggling church in upstate New York. To this day, the people and memories of that time are very dear to me.
I remember going to Floyd Baptist Church with two primary principles in hand and heart:
1) Preach God’s Word (stay away from man’s opinion), and
2) Pray with dependence upon God’s power, not our own.
In those days, I made many mistakes, but I believe that for the most part we stuck to those principles … and we saw God do some marvelous things. Many folks grew in their walk and others were added to the Kingdom. In other words, God was there, in our midst, doing that which only He could do.
At a time when methods sometimes seem to trump the Master, may we dedicate ourselves to those principles that continually invite His necessary involvement.
It is with men as with wheat; the light heads are erect even in the presence of Omnipotence, but the full heads bow in reverence before Him. – Richard Joseph Cooke
