And they will know that I am the Lord; I did not threaten to bring this disaster on them without a reason. – Ezekiel 6:10
Why do bad things happen to bad people? No, I didn’t get the question wrong. I just thought we all might need a reminder that none of us are really that good!
So … back to the question. Why? Perhaps, one reason is that bad actions usually result from bad character and such actions typically result in some bad consequences. Another reason might be that the Almighty, in His infinite wisdom, knew that if there were no bad consequences for bad behavior we would just continue to behave badly. Imagine what the world would be like if there was no punishment for evil actions.
The final reason why bad things happen to bad people is that ultimate Good created the universe and rules it. God is holy and while evil may endure for a “night,” there is coming a “dawn” of righteous retribution that can only be evaded by the “bad” who are clothed in the “goodness” of Christ. The ultimate eradication of evil is the eternal proof of the ultimate goodness of our God.
All human sin seems so much worse in its consequences than in its intentions. – Reinhold Niebuhr
