A Terrifying Indifference

As soon as Jehudi would read three or four columns, Jehoiakim would cut the scroll with a scribe’s knife and throw the columns into the blazing fire until the entire scroll was consumed by the fire in the brazier. As they heard all these words, the king and all of his servants did not become terrified or tear their garments. – Jeremiah 36:23-24
A dear brother in Christ once preached a memorable (for many reasons) sermon on this text, entitled, “Effectively Shredding the Word of God.” His proposition was that every time one willfully ignores God’s truth he, in effect, rips it out of his Bible. Another teacher I know has illustrated this, to the horror of his students, by actually tearing the pages out as he reads undesirable passages!
Quite the convicting picture, isn’t it?
While these are disturbing thoughts, there is another that may go unnoticed by some. As the king (leader) accomplished the task of destroying the written words of God’s prophet, no one seemed to be terrified or grieved by his actions.
Now, you tell me which is more terrifying: a leader who shreds the Word or a people who remain indifferent to the massacre.
After the first blush of sin comes its indifference. – Henry David Thoreau
