Who’s Opinion Is It?

“I am against the prophets” — the Lord’s declaration — “who use their own tongues to make a declaration.” – Jeremiah 23:31
One thought has governed my preaching ministry since I first entered seminary over 30 years ago. I wish I could say that I have always succeeded in remembering it, but I am sure that at times I have failed. That thought/idea/principle is this:
God’s opinion trumps mine every time.
The great temptation for anyone who has been given an opportunity to speak to God’s people is to mingle his/her own opinion with God’s and to proclaim both as if they were equal in importance … without making a distinction between the two. This practice, unchecked, has caused great damage among the saints. Is it not true that all heresies bear the unmistakable mark of flawed human logic?
While there is no harm in offering your opinion on a biblical text, one must be sure to LOUDLY footnote that the source is own finite human intelligence. To claim that our “truth” carries the authority of God’s Truth is worse than plagiarism, it is the distinguishing mark of a false prophet.
Strong preachers have ever been Bible preachers. – Fish
