Hear this! The days are coming — this is the declaration of the Lord God — when I will send a famine through the land: not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger from sea to sea and roam from north to east, seeking the word of the Lord, but they will not find it. – Amos 8:11-12
The inevitable end of prolonged disobedience to God’s Word is a spiritual famine. This “famine” could be described as a total retraction of Divine wisdom and instruction that both results from and leads to a wanton reliance upon human/worldly devices. Of course, it is this negative consequence and inevitable failure that also leads the true follower to the repentance that God seeks.
Perhaps this is why the biblical advice to “seek Him while He may be found” is best directed at those who claim to know the Lord. For if Christ and His wisdom sometimes seem unavailable to us, it is probably due to the fact that we have so infrequently sought it. A large portion of the people on earth have not the opportunity to hear the words of the Lord. They cannot even dream of it; therefore, it just makes no sense that a person who claims to have heard it once would not want to hear it again and again.
He that loves the Word and the purity of its precepts cannot turn traitor. – William Gurnall
