Benaiah son of Jehoiada was the son of a brave man from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. Benaiah killed two sons of Ariel of Moab, and he went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. He also killed an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. Even though the Egyptian had a spear in his hand like a weaver’s beam, Benaiah went down to him with a club, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and then killed him with his own spear. – 1 Chronicles 11:22-23

I like movies. I really like movies with a clear hero. My favorites are those where the hero, when necessary, opens up a can of “you-know-what” and puts a beat-down on an evil enemy who thinks he cannot be defeated. Perhaps this is why I wish they would make a movie about Benaiah.

Benaiah makes (in some ways) David (the guy who slew Goliath) look like a wuss. Of course, there is much more to David’s story than an encounter with a Philistine giant, but you have to wonder if Benaiah wouldn’t have just grabbed Goliath by his beard and slapped him silly.

On the other hand, as b-b-b-bad to the bone (shout out to George Thorogood) as Benaiah was, Jesus was b-b-b-badder. The Son of God faced down the evil enemy (Satan) with a club of grace, snatched his weapon (death) from his hand, and then defeated him with it! Benaiah is worthy of some admiration and awe, but Jesus is worthy of WORSHIP. In a day when real heroes seem to be overshadowed by those created by the media and others are portrayed as heroes who have truly done nothing worthy of the title, consider the Lord of our salvation … and bow down.

God is a hero. – Stacie Orrico
