Hang the veil under the clasps and bring the ark of the testimony there behind the veil, so the veil will make a separation for you between the holy place and the most holy place. Put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place. – Exodus 26:33-34

As Moses was speaking with God … face-to-face …, he was instructed to build a tabernacle that contained a veil that would act as an effective “barrier” between the regular Israelite and God’s holy presence. Only the Great High Priest would be allowed to enter beyond this barrier, into the most holy place, into God’s presence, once each year, under some very strict rules and conditions. The privilege that Moses was offered (and the high priest carried) also brought great responsibility and even then, this special relationship with God did not guarantee entry to the Promised Land (as his disobedience would later prove).

Make no mistake. God is still holy. He should be both feared and revered. To be in His presence is no minor thing. It is an unimaginable privilege … made possible for anyone who will trust in His Son … and only offered by the means of unimaginable grace.

No attribute of God is more dreadful to sinners than His holiness. – Matthew Henry
