They cried out with a loud voice: “Lord, the One who is holy and true, how long until You judge and avenge our blood from those who live on the earth?” – Revelation 6:10
The eternal question for all those who feel the sting of earthly suffering … be it at the hand of an oppressor or a seemingly unfortunate turn of circumstance … is this, “How long will it go on?”
Don’t you wish we knew? As one who has been both “comforter” and “comforted,” I confess that usually the answer eludes me. Yet, I also know there is One who knows exactly how long and He has said with all assurance, “Not forever!” For no matter how long one’s torment may seem, in Christ it cannot be forever. It will end and you will know it has ended when all the grace-filled moments that have kept you steadfast are no longer necessary.
Hang tough. As sure as God is present, He is also on the way.
Reform is not pleasant, but grievous; no person can reform themselves without suffering and hard work, how much less a nation. – Thomas Carlyle
