Then he commanded them: “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.” – Mark 8:15
There are two apparent dangers that pose a threat to the abundant Christian life. One will lead you to legalism and the other to licentiousness. One was the yeast of the Pharisees and the other was the yeast of Herod … and Jesus soberly warned His disciples about them both. Apparently, minor influence from either source is a danger to true faith and history has proven that each can lead either to heresy and/or theological error.
The only defense against such threats is a thorough knowledge of God’s Word, an indwelling Holy Spirit, and a solid hermeneutical principle (healthy biblical interpretation). Hold firmly to God’s precepts and you will be safe. Abandon truth for prevailing cultural opinion and you will find yourself careening off His highway into an idolatrous ditch.
It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself. – Thomas Jefferson
