At the time of his distress, King Ahaz himself became more unfaithful to the LORD. – 2 Chronicles 28:22
There is an old proverb that states, “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.” In his moment of distress, King Ahaz became more unfaithful to the Lord. He … just … kept … digging.
As a former shepherd of God’s flock, I am always surprised when someone continues down a path that is obviously leading to their own destruction. On more than one occasion, I have been able to clearly show such people the eventual outcome of their intended path, but it seemed that even if I had taken their “shovel” away, they would have just used their own two hands.
I came to understand that only God Himself can show a person that, in fact, down is not up … that works can neither save nor sanctify. Those without Christ keep digging because they think that it is the only answer to their crisis, need, or hunger. So sad, but often so true.
Are you in a hole? For God’s sake, stop digging.
It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. – Mark Twain
