The Reaping

As for this temple, which was exalted, every passerby will be appalled and will say: Why did the LORD do this to this land and this temple? – 2 Chronicles 7:21

Just in case Israel forgot the reason that the Temple had lost its former glory (at that certain point in the future when God obviously knew it would occur), God took a moment to remind King Solomon of the inevitable formula for failure. He told Solomon that He would destroy the country and the Temple if the people abandoned Him and attached themselves to other gods.  Or, to put it another way, God said, “If you turn from me, don’t expect me to be there for you when it all falls apart.”

There is not a single Christ-follower on the face of the earth who is surprised when countries crumble in the aftermath of rampant immorality. The first question for those of us in the United States is whether or not we will be surprised when the same thing occurs here. The second question is, “What will we do about it?” Paul said it best, “Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows he will also reap, because the one who sows to his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit (Galatians 6:7-8).”

We, too, will reap. But what?

Our country is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction, to wit: by consolidation of power first, and then corruption, its necessary consequence. – Thomas Jefferson
