Grow Old AND Grow Up

Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have sound faith and be filled with love and patience. – Titus 2:2

I am becoming an old man. My hair is getting whiter every day. My eyesight and hearing are failing. Other “stuff” just doesn’t work like it once did. You get the picture.

Yet, in spite of all these “changes,” I am still pleased, because it seems that some things (that were not as strong as I would have once liked) are now growing. For example, I am MORE self-controlled, MORE worthy of respect, MORE sensible, and MORE sound in faith, love, and endurance, than I used to be. YOU DO NOT HEAR ME SAYING I have “arrived” in any of these attributes, but maybe I am at least growing in them. In other words, God is working on me and in me and, hopefully, I look a little more like Jesus today than I did yesterday.

Aging might not be fun, but it IS necessary and inevitable. There is no question that it comes for us all. The important question is this, “As you grow old, are you also growing up?” To experience the former without the latter would just be a sad waste of life.

The aging process has you firmly in its grasp if you never get the urge to throw a snowball. – Don Larson

  1. Lovely photographs, David, and there isn’t that much difference between them! I, too, am becoming older and seem to be falling over a lot just lately – I remind myself that children fall down a lot too.

God teaches me things daily and I pray that I am growing spiritually.
