… I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. For, at just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. – 1 Timothy 6:13-15
Henry Blackaby, in his popular study entitled “Experiencing God,” taught that in the absence of a new commandment from the Lord, a Christ-follower should just remain obedient to the last command he has received. To put it simply, we, like soldiers, have received our marching orders and should follow them until they are replaced.
Great instruction. So, what are our marching orders? Here we see Paul’s marching orders to his protégé Timothy, but perhaps they would work for us, too. The questions of WHAT to do, HOW to do it, and HOW LONG to do it are all answered.
WHAT should we do? Obey this command without wavering, which in this case seems to refer to fighting the good fight of faith (v. 12).
HOW should we fight this good fight? In a manner that no one would be able to find any fault; in a word, faultlessly.
HOW LONG must we fight? We must fight the good fight until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.
Our orders are simple. Now, we just need to get to it.
Every soldier must know, before he goes into battle, how the little battle he is to fight fits into the larger picture, and how the success of his fighting will influence the battle as a whole. – Bernard Law Montgomery
