Just Keep Running

I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. – Philippians 3:13-14

When I look back on my 33 years in vocational Christian ministry … with all of its twists and turns … I sometimes wonder if I led my family as I should have. While not all changes seemed planned, they certainly seemed to be the plan of God at the time. Will I achieve 50 years in ministry? Perhaps, if I remain obedient to God’s call and direction for my life. Otherwise, the duration of my service is purely up to a sovereign God. All I can do is maintain the attitude of the Apostle Paul, a man who just kept … “running.”

At the end of this earthly life, there is a prize. Like Paul, we must all run to win it. Sometimes the path or course resembles a steeple-chase (full of obstacles), but the only answer is to keep running, to press on. With that in mind, we must forget what is behind (without neglecting the lessons learned) and focus on what is ahead.

What new “paths” lie ahead of us? Are there any challenges or changes to be confronted? Any unexpected turns? Of course, there are, but for our part, we only need to RUN!

By perseverance, the snail reached the ark. – Charles Spurgeon
