And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others. – Mark 7:13
Do you have any traditions in your family? Most families have a least one or two. For example one of our fun family traditions is to call and sing Happy Birthday to our kids … particularly, Cindy … and if you know Cindy, then you will know why this is so funny ;-).
Our churches are full of traditions, too. Even if your church is not “traditional,” you still have some. Sometimes our order of worship is traditional, as well as the times we meet. In fact, sometimes, the WHOLE program of a church’s ministry is rooted in tradition. Of course, this only becomes a problem if a program begins to replace the priority of God’s Word. This would be the sin of the Pharisees as they revoked God’s Word by traditions that had been handed down within their culture.
Here’s a simple rule to follow: Examine everything in the light of God’s truth, then keep only that which truly honors Him.
As soon as tradition has come to be recognized as tradition, it is dead. – Allan Bloom
