The joyful shouting and weeping mingled together in a loud noise that could be heard far in the distance. – Ezra 3:13
This morning, when you finally awakened, were you happy or sad? My guess is that you were most likely one or the other. When those who had seen Solomon’s Temple experienced the rebuilt foundation of that same structure, some rejoiced but others wept. From a distance, it was not possible to distinguish between the two.
In the Christian life, there are many reasons to be happy. We’re saved from a Christless eternity. We have an abundant life here and now. We possess a wonderful family in Christ Jesus. On the other hand, there are also some reasons to be sad. We sin and suffer the consequences. We disobey God and receive His chastisement. Sometimes we even act like we don’t believe the things we profess. Perhaps worst of all, many people around the world die each day without Christ Jesus.
So, what’s a disciple to do in the midst of this human experience?
Cry out to God … in joy and in sadness … just cry out to Him. Our Savior absolutely hears every utterance and possibly others will hear our cries and be drawn to the One who came to seek and save.
If any of you should ask me for an epitome of the Christian religion, I should say that it is in one word – prayer. Live and die without prayer, and you will pray long enough when you get to hell. – Charles Spurgeon
