Habit Forming

But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God. – Daniel 6:10


Are you a person who has a lot of discipline? I think I have a lot of discipline … well, at least some of the time, I do. My spiritual “habits” are too often easily interrupted by an unexpected event or change of schedule. How about yours?

Even though Daniel’s life was in danger, he continued to observe his practice of prayer (three times each day). From his example, we may therefore deduce that real spiritual discipline is not initiated in a crisis, but rather it is developed through day-in and day-out practice. When pressure is applied, we will revert to that which is most familiar (comfortable) within our routine. If we have not developed a spiritual discipline in a time of “peace,” we will most likely not find it at hand in a time of “battle.”

Develop such “habits” before a crisis occurs and if they are deeply ingrained, they will remain with you even in the midst of danger or change.
