A True Friend

If only there were a mediator between us, someone who could bring us together. The mediator could make God stop beating me, and I would no longer live in terror of His punishment. Then I could speak to Him without fear, but I cannot do that in my own strength. – Job 9:33-35

When difficulties come (and they always do), to whom do you run for help? Most Christ-followers would say, “God,” but what if you feel (like Job) as if He is the One working against you?

Is it possible that you have indeed sinned against God? This could be the problem. While your relationship with God in Christ can never be broken, it is certainly possible to damage the friendship. Maybe you should ask yourself, “Do I have any sin I need to confess?” If so, confess it! Be honest with God about His righteous standard, not some watered-down version of your own making. Renew the friendship.

If the problem isn’t sin, then maybe God has allowed this difficulty in your life for another reason. Remember that though a Christ-follower may feel lonely, she is never alone. The Spirit who lives within us will never depart. Christ is our Savior. If the friendship with God is good, our difficulties should only make us stronger. As a true friend, God only wants our best … and will not settle for less.

A mere friend will agree with you, but a real friend will argue. – Russian Proverb
