Then the Lord said, “Because this people draw near with their words and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote, therefore behold, I will once again deal marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous; and the wisdom of their wise men will perish, and the discernment of their discerning men will be concealed.” – Isaiah 29:13-14
Speaking prophetically, Isaiah recorded God’s words to God’s people. The accusation and charge against them was hypocrisy. They honored God with their mouths and their words gave the impression that they were living in obedience, but their hearts were nowhere near the presence of God.
Honesty and transparency should be characteristics of every Christian, but too often we say one thing and do another. While we may all be guilty of such pretense, but God is not pleased by it and expects us to repent. What will that repentance resemble? We will know we have turned from this sin of hypocrisy when we stop “talking” and begin “doing,” when our actions begin to speak louder than our words.
Enough with the rhetoric, let’s do something. Today, may our reverence for God be evident in acts of service unto God in the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord.
Necessity of action takes away the fear of the act and makes bold resolution the favorite of fortune. – Francis Quarles
