When its limbs are dry, they are broken off; women come and make a fire with them, for they are not a people of discernment, therefore their Maker will not have compassion on them. And their Creator will not be gracious to them. – Isaiah 27:11
Someone once said that “ignorance is bliss.” But is it? Ignorance may allow a person to proceed through life as if everything is going well when, in fact, the opposite is true. Too often, it seems, we are like the proverbial ostrich who sticks his head in the sand. We think that if we ignore hard truth, it will just somehow magically disappear or result in a favorable conclusion.
Ignorance may produce a fleeting peace, but it is not joyful. For the Christ-follower, ignorance is disobedience. To act as if the truth does not exist can only mean that the heart is closed to God’s wisdom and insight, which explains our Creator’s lack of compassion and mercy with such people.
Willful ignorance in the face of God’s truth is nothing less than destructive rebellion.
We live on an island surrounded by a sea of ignorance. As our island of knowledge grows, so does the shore of our ignorance. – John A. Wheeler
