But I know your sitting down, and your going out and your coming in, and your raging against Me. – 2 Kings 19:27
Sennacherib was the king of Assyria during the reign of Hezekiah, king of Judah. Mistakenly, the Assyrian king thought that his own power had brought him victory over his enemies, and he boasted of his ability to sack Jerusalem as well. In his hubris, he either forgot (or perhaps never realized) the involvement of a sovereign, almighty God.
It was eventually through Isaiah that God asked the pagan leader a simple question, “‘Have you not heard? Long ago I did it; from ancient times I planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into ruinous heaps (2 Kings 19:25).” In other words, God asked, “Who do you think made all this happen?”
Too often we act like Sennacherib. We begin to think that we are the masters of our own destiny and easily forget that God “planned it long ago.” Regrettably, when we ignore our “Designer,” we begin to walk the widest path to personal destruction, one that unsuccessfully resists the unflinching sovereignty of God.
Satan cannot win. Why not? Because he has denied God’s sovereignty and disobeyed God’s law. – Gary North
