The Return on His Investment

Now God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand that is on the seashore. – 1 Kings 4:29

Solomon must have had some level of intelligence before God gave him an abundance of it, because he was wise enough to ask for more! Of course, biblical history tells us that Solomon’s commitment to God eventually waned and he began to worship false gods. Sadly, the divine gifts of “wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind” couldn’t keep Solomon from sin and destructive actions … and our spiritual gifts won’t keep us from them either.

At the moment of regeneration (conversion), we receive gifts by the Spirit of God. These gifts empower us for the performance of the Lord’s ministry and are evidence of God’s investment in His Kingdom. They do not keep us from sin, but they do serve as a reminder of our responsibility before our Sovereign, encouraging us toward greater sanctification. Without Him (God’s presence within), we would be powerless to resist all that the flesh demands. With Him, we can gain the victory.

May the investment of God IN us continue to produce a life of devotion and worship FROM us!

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware (1 Corinthians 12:1) – Paul, the Apostle
