He said to the sons of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’ then you shall inform your children, saying, ‘Israel crossed this Jordan on dry ground.’” – Joshua 4:21-22
When God made a way for the people of Israel to pass through the Jordan River, twelve stones acted as a monument to His faithfulness. The river, at flood stage, was a formidable obstacle, but God stopped its flow and a nation crossed on dry land. In truth, we have all experienced formidable obstacles in our lives and God has often helped us to “the other side.” So, what are the “monuments” in our lives that we can show our children that speak to the faithfulness of our God?
How about the “stone” of a changed life? Or the “stone” of honest worship? Or even the “stone” of a clear testimony? These are just three memorials that should be found in every Christ-follower. Perhaps there should even be more, considering that we have so often experienced the strong and faithful hand of an Almighty God.
No matter the obstacle, we follow and serve the Overcomer.
Memory is the treasure house of the mind wherein the monuments thereof are kept and preserved. – Thomas Fuller
