Know, then, it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people. – Deuteronomy 9:6

Many Israelites must have thought that their blessings (freedom, protection, provision) came as a direct result of their obedience; however, Moses reminded them that they had often disobeyed the commandments of God. If God had blessed them, it was because of His covenant, His faithfulness, and His righteousness, not theirs.

If we (as Christ-followers) are the wonderful recipients of God’s blessing, then what? Did we deserve it? Can we claim any responsibility for this “gift?” We, like Israel, may have seen success and blessing, but like Israel, it is not due to our faithfulness. It is a result of God’s perfect covenant with His Son, Jesus Christ (The Righteous One), in whom we find life everlasting and a sure promise of a secure future.

Too often, we claim the credit when all goes well and God gets the blame when all goes wrong. When “finding fault,” we must be sure to discover its proper source.

We turn to God for help when our foundations are shaking only to learn it is God shaking them. – Charles West
