The Failure in Success

Then it shall come about when the Lord your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build, and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn cisterns which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you eat and are satisfied, then watch yourself, that you do not forget the Lord who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. – Deuteronomy 6:11-12

Do you know what is the greatest enemy of our worship of God? Well, it isn’t Satan and it isn’t an idol. The greatest enemy of our worship of God may just be our success. God warned the Israelites that they should be careful not to forget Him when they began to enjoy the fruits of victory in the promised land. He said this because they tended to ignore Him when everything was going well.

Ever done that?

Like Israel, we must not forget the Lord who brought us out of the “land” of sin and slavery. Our success is no accident. When we succeed in His service, even when we succeed in life itself, it is always His plan and blessing at work. On the other hand, if we fail, it is often simply because we have forgotten the One made that success possible.

On earth we have nothing to do with success or its results, but only being true to God and for God; for it is sincerity and not success which is the sweet savor before God. – Frederick W. Robertson
