I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments, if, instead, you reject My statutes, and if your soul abhors My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant, I, in turn, will do this to you: I will appoint over you a sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the soul to pine away; also, you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it up. – Leviticus 26:12-16

God made a covenant with the Israelites and the covenant that He made came with certain conditions. Israel had to listen to, heed, and obey God and His laws, His commandments, and His rules. If they broke any single one of His laws, commandments, and rules, then God was not bound to keep His covenant with them, and the results would be devastating (Lev. 26:15-39).

Yet, despite their disobedience, there was something that God would never do. God would never leave them, forget them, or forsake them. In fact, if there was sincere repentance (even though the consequences for their sin might be difficult to bear), there would always be forgiveness and restoration (Lev. 26:40-42).

God keeps His covenants and the one that matters most to anyone who will believe is the new one sealed by the blood of His own Son. In Him, in Christ and only in Christ, is a blessed eternity secured.

Sin comes when we take a perfectly natural desire or longing or ambition and try desperately to fulfill it without God. Not only is it sin, it is a perverse distortion of the image of the Creator in us. All these good things, and all our security, are rightly found only and completely in Him. – Augustine
