The rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?” – Numbers 11:4
One year and two months after they had departed Egypt, only three days after they had left the foot of Mt. Sinai, even with the evidence of God’s presence continually manifest in a cloud by day and fire by night, many Israelites began to complain about the “manna” that God had miraculously provided. Completely surrounded by the evidence of God’s care, they still found something about which to complain.
But are we really any different? Even amid God’s work and presence, we often see “rabble” with a “greedy desires.” We are so easily dissatisfied with God’s gifts, too often more focused on personal ease or reward than His glory.
Let us not reject God’s present provision (no matter how meager it may seem) for a (no matter how brief) taste of a glorified past. The fulfillment of the Lord’s promises is ever forward.
Christianity may not explain everything, but it most certainly transforms everything. – Selwyn Hughes
