Where Are the Leaders?

The kings of the earth did not believe, nor did any of the inhabitants of the world, that the adversary and the enemy could enter the gates of Jerusalem. Because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who have shed in her midst the blood of the righteous; they wandered, blind, in the streets; they were defiled with blood so that no one could touch their garments. – Lamentations 4:12-14

The illusion of safety and security within the borders of the mainland United States was forever shattered on September 11, 2001. Since that horrible day, more attacks have occurred and most experts on terrorism agree that despite our best efforts, there will be other attacks in the future. Though many logical reasons have been given for this most recent pandemic peril, some Christ-followers suggest that God’s judgment may be at work. I tend to think this “world” is just passing away and all we now see is the decline that Scripture predicts.

Of course, there will always be those spiritual leaders who (with a predominantly Western view of the world) blame the wickedness of “American” culture for God’s possible retribution; however, could it be that the lack of spiritual leadership itself is to blame. Are those who lead Christ’s church truly any different from those whom they seek to see won to Christ? How can we possibly blame others for any suspected judgment from God without also looking closely at ourselves for the causes of that same corrective punishment?

Leadership is not only knowing the way to go; it is also showing how to get there with integrity.

Example is leadership. – Albert Schweitzer
