What Does God Think?

I will be more lightly esteemed than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with the maids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be distinguished.” – 2 Samuel 6:22

When the ark of the covenant was finally brought to Jerusalem, King David was part of a huge procession that preceded it. As he went before the ark into the city, Samuel tells us that David danced with “all his might” wearing nothing but a linen tunic. When his wife Michal saw David dancing with such abandon, she was embarrassed and told him that his behavior was not proper for a king.

David might have been a king, but he also saw himself as a humble worshiper of a transcendent God. You might also remember that this was the second attempt and a man had died in the first one! Humility is not only expected in a worshiper, it is also required and of all the things that may hinder our own ability to freely worship the Savior, “what others might think” may be the greatest.

While we must never be the center of attention in corporate praise, the question we should be asking ourselves is, “What does God think?”

The climax of God’s happiness is the delight He takes in the echoes of His excellence in the praises of His people. – John Piper
