Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way. – Luke 6:26
Praise and popularity are poor barometers when it comes to measuring faithful leadership in God’s kingdom. Old Testament prophets like Elijah, Jeremiah, and Samuel were rarely popular, because they chose to stand with God’s truth instead of the world’s falsehood. Jesus, Himself, was popular (for a short time), but that popularity waned as the crowd began to discover the true direction of His ministry.
When it seems that you’re headed upstream and everyone else is swimming against you, before you decide to give up and “go with the flow,” you might want to consider checking a couple of things.
Your direction (is it God’s?). Are the actions you are seeking to take in line with the teachings of the New Testament (considering God’s full redemptive plan in the Old)?
Your attitude (is it godly?). In your actions, are you exhibiting the fruit of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control)?
If the answers to #’s 1 and 2 are a solid, “Yes,” then your only option is to keep swimming with all His might!
I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is, “Try to please everybody.” – Herbert Swope
