The Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hands, for Israel would become boastful, saying, ‘My own power has delivered me.’” – Judges 7:2
If a person should ever begin to wonder about the almighty power of God, he might look to the Exodus miracles (plagues, Red Sea parting, water from a rock, manna, etc.) for examples. For a more contemporary illustration, however, one might consider Gideon.
Has God, working through human agency, ever done so much with so little? Gideon, not unlike Moses, was a very reluctant leader, but God “encouraged” him (like Moses) into His service. Then, after Gideon’s leadership was established and his service secured, God purposely eliminated any semblance of strength in his army!
We are never more capable in God’s service than when we are most dependent on His strength. God always seems to perform His greatest works out of our weakness for it is in our weakness that His strength is revealed, and His Name glorified.
Gideon is just one example. Now, why can’t you be another?
My faith has no bed to sleep upon, but omnipotence. – Samuel Rutherford
