To Know Him

When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. – Luke 2:17-19

In these two sentences, we see two differing responses to the miraculous birth of Jesus.

When the shepherds learned of the Messiah’s arrival, they freely proclaimed all that they had seen and heard. Mary, on the other hand, told no one. Of course, while the shepherds were objective observers of the angelic host and Messianic predictions, Mary was an involved mother and took some time to absorb the grandeur of this deeply personal event. What could she possibly say? Who would even begin to believe her experience? Now what?

It is often more difficult to remain objective when God’s work is intimately personal. Yet, the more personal your experience with God, the more lasting and life-changing will be the outcome. Get to know the Son of God and, like Mary, come to understand not only what He means to you, but also what He means to the world.

We tend to be a generation of Christians who major on minor matters but do not seem to possess the true measure of the gospel in the knowledge of God. We do not really know God. At best we know about Him. – Sinclair B. Ferguson
