Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, and had known all the deeds of the Lord which He had done for Israel. – Joshua 24:31

Why is it that every succeeding generation seems to repeat the mistakes of the one that preceded it?

Often in biblical history, if a faithful leader and his contemporaries remained alive, then the people remained faithful; however, when that leader and his generation died, then the people began to abandon the Lord. Considering this fact, “Who truly failed?” Was it the generation who sinned or the one that failed to leave an enduring legacy of faith?

We cannot rest upon the faith of our predecessors. For one’s walk with Christ to be real, it must obviously be personal. At the same time, we cannot neglect our God-given opportunity to portray an authentic relationship with the Lord to those who follow. How?

By helping them learn how to walk by faith before we take the short, immediate trip “home.”

History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are. – David McCullough
