All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him. – Luke 1:66
John, son of Zechariah and Elizabeth (and Jesus’ first cousin), who became “The Baptist” had an auspicious beginning to his life. His prenatal years (and even his birth) were surrounded by an air of expectancy and the palpable presence of God. Considering all of this, it was natural for his parents and the surrounding community to wonder at all that God had in store.
Even though our own children lack such miraculous beginnings, do we not wonder as well? What will our children become? Will they change the world? What kind of lives will they lead?
Having reared two of our own, I can tell you (from experience) that some of your hopes will be realized, but others will not. I can also tell you that you will sometimes look back and wonder how they survived your parenting at all! The wonderful assurance is that the Lord’s hand is with them no matter the outcome. So, whether you’re parenting “John the Baptist” or “John the Tax Collector,” God can and will still do things through your kid that will accomplish His sovereign purpose and plan.
The best way to keep children home is to make the home atmosphere pleasant and let the air out of the tires. – Dorothy Parker
