For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. – Mark 10:45
As Jesus neared the end of His time on earth, the disciples began to bicker over who among them would hold the best positions in His new kingdom. It seems that they had no idea what Jesus truly meant by “kingdom,” but they certainly thought they did.
When Jesus spoke of kings, leaders, and rank He made it clear that the power of spiritual leadership came from beneath, from a position of service. He also taught (and lived) that this position of leadership could not be obtained by personal power, but rather by the subjection of personal power to the almighty power of God. The well-known leadership coach, John Maxwell, once said, “He that thinketh he leadeth, and hath no one following, is only taking a walk.” Ultimately, our leadership will be measured by how we have influenced others in their obedience to Christ, not by how many follow us (in-person or on social media).
As bondservants of Christ, may we influence others to follow Him completely. This is the leadership He desires.
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. – John R. W. Stott
