How Will They Find It?

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. – Matthew 7:13-14

The way of mankind is the way of destruction. It has been this way since Adam willfully chose his own desires over his Creator’s. Often our self-destructive tendencies can even be brutal and barbaric. At other times, they may be more subtle and civilized, but no less destructive. This is the “broad” way.

On the other hand, the way of life, because it is narrow, if not intentionally sought will be entirely missed. In truth, it is clear evidence of God’s grace that a “way of life” even exists. Would we, could we have found it on our own? Absolutely not. For some, like myself, a heritage of faith (itself a work of God’s grace even if it was largely cultural) was passed on that presented the possibility of a path to eternal life with Christ. I could have rejected what was freely offered but did not. Of course, there is still no room for boasting (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Yet, what about the majority who lack such a heritage? What about the billions who don’t know there is a “narrow way that leads to life?” The answer is simple, but the response is not. Someone must go and tell them, or they will never find it.

The church which is not a missionary church will be a missing church when Jesus comes. – F.B. Meyer
