They Know Not

Men were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory. – Revelation 16:9

One of the most troubling and frustrating experiences I have faced as a Christ-follower is the rejection of the gospel by someone who seems to grasp biblical truth and the necessity of salvation.

For example, I once spent over two hours with a woman in her 90’s going through the scriptures on how she could enjoy the abundant life in Christ, then and forever. She had squandered her life in a dead religion and even expressed her fear that all her good works would not be enough to please God and gain entrance into heaven. Yet, when I asked if she would like to confess Christ as her Lord and Savior and receive His gift of salvation by grace through faith, she refused stating, “Your religion is just too easy.”

The utter deception of our enemy coupled with humanity’s innate pride produces a formidable opponent, that even in the great tribulation will march defiantly into eternal destruction. We might even wonder how Jesus felt concerning those who would stubbornly reject His sacrifice, but then again, we know, don’t we?

From His cross He said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

There is nothing progressive about being pig-headed and refusing to admit a mistake. – C. S. Lewis
