Then they will go forth and look on the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm will not die and their fire will not be quenched; and they will be an abhorrence to all mankind. – Isaiah 66:24
Over a decade ago, I served a church that hosted an event called, “Truth or Terror.” The purpose was to present a dramatized “tract” explaining the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and eternal life with Him in heaven. It drew hundreds of participants, largely due to the prospect of being scared out of your wits. Was it effective? Perhaps, but frankly only God knows.
The peak of the experience was, as you might expect, a pit, a depiction of hell. Through some horrific scenes, the “actors” tried to depict the terror and reality of hell. The presentation was intended to be graphic, as eternal fire, thirst, retribution, and punishment were depicted. While the church readily admitted that in this age of a jaded, desensitized America, it was difficult to shock anyone, they put their best “horror foot” forward. Of course, hell is truly, infinitely worse than anyone could ever possibly present.
Someone once said, “I would rather scare someone into heaven than lull them into hell.” I am certain that I can do neither one, but the biblical truth is that hell is a terror and it is forever. Trust Christ today.
Disbelieve hell, and you unscrew, unsettle, and unpin everything in Scripture. – J. C. Ryle
