For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. – Romans 1:20
This happens to be one of the more difficult biblical truths for people to accept. How could God condemn to hell a person who has never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ? What makes this truth so unappealing is the prevailing thought among many that a person should not be held responsible for his or her sin until he or she knows the way of forgiveness for that sin. How can a person be held accountable for their own ignorance?
Paul clearly explains that there is no excuse for sin (missing God’s mark of perfect holiness), only a payment. Someone must pay the wage (price) for sin, either the individual or another on her behalf. Jesus made the payment, but each person must turn from his sin and trust in Christ’s atoning sacrifice on the cross for that payment to be applied.
God has revealed Himself to all humanity and each person must respond to the light given. Many will not, but the blame cannot be laid at the feet of the Savior. As I said, there is no excuse for sin, only a payment, and Jesus paid it all.
We all carry about in our pockets His very nails. – Martin Luther
