You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all. – Acts 19:26
When Paul came to Ephesus preaching the gospel, he almost single-handedly shut down a major religious tourism industry. He never publicly protested against it, nor did he pass around a petition. The industry was idol-production and when the Ephesians began to come to the true God (in Christ Jesus), they simply quit buying false ones. Personal regeneration caused widespread social transformation.
While sin (and its harmful effects) may be regulated by statute, morality can never be successfully legislated. The only answer to a sinful idolatrous culture is the powerful life-changing presence of Jesus Christ, a Holy Spirit inspired Scripture, and the conversion of lost souls.
Certainly, we must speak up, but let us also lovingly speak of our Christ.
