The Way Back

Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to Him, “Take away all guilt and receive us graciously, so that we may present the fruit of our lips.” – Hosea 14:1-2

Selwyn Hughes, in his devotional book Every Day with Jesus, identified four steps to deal with a demanding, unrepentant spirit:

Step One – Return to the Lord. Choose to turn from self-dependence to dependence upon God.

Step Two – Take words of repentance with you. Be specific about your sin and from what you’re actually turning.

Step Three – Say to the Lord, “Forgive all my sin.” Acknowledge your need for His forgiveness and thank Him for it.

Step Four – Say to the Lord, “Please accept what is good, so that I may repay You with praise from my lips.” Make an offering of “dependent” praise. This is the humble acknowledgement that apart from God’s grace, good works are impossible.

I would only add this summation, no matter how far we might have wandered, the way back to the Lord is always before us. We must simply take it.

True repentance never leads to despair. Its leads home. It leads to grace. – John Ortberg
